Meet the Band

Matthew Shenton: Trumpet

What inspired you to start learning your instrument?

My brother played the trumpet and I think I wanted to be like him! He was often playing old records of jazz trumpet players and I remember being inspired.

Who are your current musical influences?

It changes most weeks! Leroy Jones, Clark Terry, Snooky Young to name but a few.

If you weren't a musician, what would you be doing?

I like the idea of being a forest ranger (in fair weather!) Failing that, a Strictly Pro?!

What are your top 3 favourite songs of all time?

The answer would be different each time you ask, but off the top of my head:

Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me

So In Love

Miss Otis Regrets

What is your most enjoyable Spitfire memory to date?

It’s a tie between seeing WW1 aeroplanes doing a dog fighting display… and meeting Anne Widdecombe (swoon!)

What is your favourite song to play with The Spitfire Sisters?

Champagne

If you could pick a song for The Spitfire Sisters to cover, what would it be?

‘I Wanna Be Like You’ from ‘The Jungle Book’ (complete with monkey impressions!)

If you could perform with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?

Don Ellis

Are you currently working on any other projects?

Not really any projects, just lots of different bands at weddings/festivals/corporate functions/parties.

And finally... how do you take your tea?

Milk, No Sugar (obviously!)
